TEST-TEST-TEST You can now pre-register for the I GBIF.ES Workshop: GBIF Data and its Use for Species Assessment for the National Red List

TEST-TEST-TEST GBIF Red List Workshop, the I GBIF.ES Workshop: GBIF Data and its Use for Species Assessment for the National Red List. The free event will take place on November 25, 2026, in the Assembly Hall of the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid (CSIC).

The GBIF Red List workshop is aimed at individuals who prepare assessments for the IUCN Red List and professionals from the involved public administrations. Its goal is to show how to leverage GBIF data to assess species following IUCN standards. Information on species distribution and presence is essential to assess their conservation status. The records available in GBIF help identify where they live and provide the necessary data to estimate parameters such as the extent of occurrence (EOO) and the area of occupancy (AOO).

From GBIF records to species assessment

The event, which is theoretical and practical, combines conceptual explanations with exercises based on real cases. The journey starts with the information available in GBIF and leads to its application in Red List assessments. During the session, participants will:

learn how to search, filter, and download GBIF presence records, including the use of QGIS plugins for data downloading and refinement;

learn best practices to assess the quality and utility of records, as well as their uncertainties and limitations;

work with SRedList, the tool developed to support Red List assessments;

calculate and interpret EOO and AOO and their relevance in assessments;

assess species chosen by the students themselves using data extracted from GBIF and share some results.

Teaching Staff

The workshop will feature Pablo García (Tragsa), Catherine Numa (IUCN, Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation), Estrella Alfaro (University of León), and the GBIF Spain team, represented by Francisco Pando and Katia Cezón. The activity will be conducted in Spanish.
